Monterrey, Mexico, has long been on my travel list. As one of the largest cities in the country, Monterrey offers a vibrant mix of culture, nightlife, and culinary delights. Located just a short 2.5-hour direct flight from TIJ on VivaAerobus, with tickets costing around $50 each way, it’s an easy and affordable weekend destination. This trip was particularly special as it coincided with Mother’s Day weekend, which I used as an opportunity to gift my wife a memorable experience.
Choosing Monterrey for a Mother’s Day Tradition
Last year, we celebrated Mother’s Day in Oaxaca with my family, so this year I decided to make Monterrey our destination. As a stepmom, my wife doesn’t usually get to spend Mother’s Day with the kids, so this trip helped create a new tradition for us. Monterrey’s lively atmosphere and diverse offerings made it the ideal choice for a short yet enriching getaway.
The Journey: Driving to TIJ Airport
For this trip, I opted to drive directly to TIJ Airport instead of using the CBX on the San Diego side. Having done this twice now, I’m convinced it’s a better choice, saving both time and money. The door-to-door drive took only 45 minutes, including the border crossing. By skipping CBX parking and ticket fees, I saved approximately $75 per person, and I was able to park right in front of the airport. The added bonus was gaining access to the VIP Lounge security, which provided a seamless and stress-free start to our journey.
VIP Lounge Experience at TIJ Airport
This was my first time using the VIP Lounge security at TIJ, and it was a game-changer. The Priority Pass lounge in the airport has two entrances—one pre-security and one post-security. Priority Pass holders can check in from the airport entrance, offering a private TSA security clearance with no lines or hassle. Once through, you’re right in the lounge. The convenience and exclusivity rivaled even the private security experience I had in the Air France first-class lounge at CDG.
Arrival in Monterrey: Embracing the Unknown
We arrived in Monterrey with no set plans or reservations, which added to the excitement. I enjoy both structured itineraries and the thrill of spontaneous exploration, and this trip was definitely the latter. With 48 hours ahead of us, we were ready to discover what Monterrey had to offer.
Staying at the JW Marriott Monterrey: A Milestone Experience
Our stay at the JW Marriott in Monterrey was another highlight of the trip. JW Marriott hotels are always known for their luxury, and having our suite upgrade confirmed along with lounge access and other amenities made the experience even more enjoyable. However, this stay was particularly special for two reasons: it was my first stay as a Marriott Ambassador Elite, and I achieved lifetime Platinum status with Marriott after this visit.
Checking In: A Warm Welcome
After a long Uber ride to the hotel due to heavy traffic, we were upgraded to a beautiful suite at the JW Marriott. The warm welcome continued with a gift of champagne and chocolates waiting in our room, setting the tone for a luxurious stay.
Exploring Monterrey: Nightlife and Daytime Adventures
Our first night in Monterrey was spent exploring the vibrant nightlife. We wandered through the downtown area, stumbling upon live music and enjoying the lively atmosphere. Although we stayed within the main nightlife streets, we felt safe throughout our explorations.
Daytime Activities: Mexican Baseball Hall of Fame and River Walk
During the day, we visited the Mexican Baseball Hall of Fame, which was an interesting and unique experience. We also took a leisurely walk along Monterrey’s river walk, enjoying the scenic views and relaxed atmosphere.
Conclusion: A Fulfilling Weekend Getaway
Our weekend in Monterrey was the perfect mix of relaxation, exploration, and luxury. While we didn’t feel the need for more time in the city, we thoroughly enjoyed our brief escape and the new memories we created. Monterrey, with its rich culture, vibrant nightlife, and luxurious accommodations, proved to be an ideal destination for a quick and satisfying getaway.
